If you’ve got a place at UCL, the first thing you’ll notice about the housing hunt is how much of Bloomsbury is already spoken for. UCL’s own halls fill early, and the private halls closest to Gower Street tend to go months before term. This page is about the rooms we can actually offer you now, and how long the journey to campus really is from each one.
All journey times below come from the TfL journey planner for a weekday morning, door to door, to UCL’s main entrance on Gower Street (WC1E 6BT).
Walking distance: Bloomsbury
Our Bloomsbury residence on Guilford Street is about 1.2 km from Gower Street. That’s a 19-minute walk, through Russell Square or along Guilford Street and Torrington Place. You won’t need a travel card for lectures, which is a real saving over a year.
The rooms are single en-suites, double en-suites and twin rooms with two single beds, each with its own shower and toilet, a desk and a wardrobe. The twins are a good option if you’re coming with a friend or sibling and want to split the cost of one room.
SOAS and Birkbeck are a short walk away too, and King’s Cross St Pancras is close enough to walk to if you’re heading home at the weekend.
One bus away: Camden
The Camden residence near Chalk Farm is about 22 minutes from UCL: a short walk to Camden High Street, a direct bus down to Euston Road, then a few minutes on foot. The Northern line from Chalk Farm or Camden Town is the other option, and it’s useful when the buses are slow.
Every room here is a studio with its own bathroom and kitchenette, so you’re not sharing a kitchen with anyone. There are single studios and larger twin/double studios. If you want to know what living in the area is like, our guide to Camden student accommodation covers the markets, the food and the night buses.
North Camden
The North Camden residence is about 30 minutes from Gower Street: a short walk to the Northern line, six minutes on the train, then a walk through Bloomsbury.
It’s a bigger building than the other two, with a café and lounges, so you’ll get to know students from other universities as well as UCL. The rooms are en-suite studios with a kitchenette. There’s an accessible studio for wheelchair users, a premium studio with bunk beds for sharing, and suites with two beds and a spare room.
What about UCL East?
If your course is at UCL East in Stratford, none of our current rooms are close. From our Walthamstow or Bloomsbury rooms it takes about 45 minutes. Tell us which campus you’re on when you apply, and we’ll be honest about whether we have anything that makes sense.
How it works
Applying is free and doesn’t commit you to anything. Send us your dates and put Gower Street (or your department’s address) on the form, since travel time is what most students care about. We check availability with the residence and usually reply the same working day with the room, the weekly rate and the total for your stay. Stays can be as short as a few weeks, which suits summer schools, pre-sessional English courses and anyone arriving before their main accommodation starts. How booking works covers payment and contracts.
Prices change through the year, so each residence page shows the current weekly rate. If the room you want is fully booked, ask anyway: we can check other dates or suggest something nearby.
