Birkbeck is unusual among London universities, and in a way that matters for where you live: a lot of the teaching happens in the evening, especially on part-time courses. If your seminar finishes at nine, getting home matters as much as getting in.
The main building is on Malet Street in Bloomsbury, beside Senate House and a few minutes from UCL and SOAS. The times below come from the TfL journey planner for a weekday morning, door to door.
Walk home after a late class: Bloomsbury
Our Bloomsbury residence on Guilford Street is about 16 minutes’ walk from Malet Street, via Russell Square. After an evening class, you’re home in roughly the time you’d spend waiting for a bus.
The rooms are single en-suites, double en-suites and twins in two Victorian townhouses, each with its own shower and toilet. The twins work well for two friends or siblings who want to share the cost of a room.
One bus away: Camden
The Camden residence near Chalk Farm is about 25 minutes from Birkbeck on one bus. Every room is a studio with a private bathroom and kitchenette. Camden stays busy late, so coming back at ten in the evening feels normal. Our Camden guide has more on the area.
North Camden
The North Camden residence is about 33 minutes away, on the Northern line and then on foot. The Northern line runs all night on Fridays and Saturdays. The building has a café and lounges, with en-suite studios, an accessible studio and suites with a spare room.
Applying
There’s no fee to apply and no commitment. Tell us your dates and whether your classes are mostly daytime or evening, and we’ll factor that in. We check availability with the residence and usually reply the same working day with the room, the weekly rate and the total. Stays from a few weeks are possible. How booking works covers the rest.
The cards below show each residence’s current weekly price, which changes through the year.
