London has more universities than any other city in the world — over 40 at the last count — and around 400,000 students living here at any given time. That is a lot of people looking for the same rooms every September.
Most student accommodation in London falls into one of two categories: purpose-built halls (PBSA) with all bills included, or shared private rentals where you sort out the bills yourself. Halls are simpler, especially in your first year. Private rentals are cheaper once you know the city and have friends to share with.
Where you live matters. A room near your campus saves time and transport costs, but a cheaper room further out often works just as well if you are near a Tube station. The Student Oyster card gives you 30% off Travelcards, which makes a 20-minute commute very affordable.
If you are an international student and would prefer to live with a British host family, our sister company London Homestays arranges homestay placements across the city. Homestay often works out cheaper than a hall and you get meals and English practice included.
